We can’t REALLY grow younger… can we?

Growing younger is a shift for most of us because society has been handicapped by the prevailing ideas and beliefs about aging. We’ve been taught that growing old is grim, that aging unavoidably involves the loss of many of our aptitudes and abilities, that aging isn’t fun or graceful and that it is often painful.

Not so many decades ago, we were also taught that people couldn’t fly – until a few forward thinkers chose not to accept the impossibility of flight. Instead, they figured out how to do it. We were taught that polio couldn’t be prevented – until Dr. Jonas Salk invented the vaccine. Today, I and other age-reversing pioneers are shaking the roots of the prevailing belief system and figuring out how we can grow younger as we age. The first step toward making it happen is to conceive of becoming youthful.

Scientific research is contributing to the day when the progressive deterioration of aging is a thing of the past. Many fields of discipline, including life-extension science and medicine, have jumped on the bandwagon of age reversal, so the possibility of growing younger is being examined and tested from many vantage points. Astounding advances are taking place every day in molecular biology, organ and tissue regeneration and nanotechnology. Breakthroughs in these fields will potentially eliminate age-related illness and give us youthful skin, organs and brains.

I focus a great deal on consciousness studies and mind/body practices, both ancient and modern, and apply the shift of consciousness to growing younger. As expressions of the Divine, we are all interacting in a field of unlimited potential. Our conscious connection to the Divine and our beliefs and behaviors determine the degree to which we express radiant, joyful life, and this applies to every area of our lives.

New scientific discoveries are revealing what many wise teachers and healers have taught for centuries: our thoughts and beliefs create our reality. Quantum physicists have found, to their complete surprise, that matter is affected by thought, a discovery that rocked the boat for the scientific community. Scientists have since peered into the life of our trillions of cells and found that they are actually responding to the environment of our thoughts and beliefs. What we say to ourselves about who we are and how we age does matter! As Henry Ford once said, “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

As the science of epigenetics shows, our fate is not controlled by our genes. Instead, non-genetic factors over which we can have control send signals to our genes to express themselves differently. More specifically, our beliefs and behaviors including diet, exercise, skincare, prayer, and our thoughts about and responses to life strongly influence the expression of our genes.

This is good news, my friends! For me it means the Alzheimer’s gene I have inherited has the opportunity to remain in the off position. I spent five years accepting the symptoms of Alzheimer’s as my fate. Then, nine years ago, I made a conscious choice to grow younger. My behaviors and my genes followed my belief, and now Alzheimer’s is just an unexpressed potential in my life.

You can reverse aging just like I have, and live an active, sexy, creative life.

Yes, I believe it can. I believe it is making me younger.

But it’s not my only daily grow younger practice. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is one of 12 daily practices that I use to grow younger and stay youthful.

The darkest year of my life…

but it could have been. If you’ve been with
me long enough, you know that in July 2011
I went on retreat to do inner work and didn’t
emerge until February 2012.

That was a long, dark night of the soul for
me – and one of the most important times
of my life because I learned so much and
transformed my life in significant ways.

Sitting can be deadly. Take butt breaks.

These days I spend quite a bit of time sitting on my butt at the computer (my second book is just about done – Yay!!) and that’s certainly not conducive to good posture. Worse than that, sitting all day can be deadly. Dr. Alpa V. Patel, an epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, studies  the health risks associated with too much sitting. According to Patel, there is a definite correlation between sitting time and reduced longevity.

In one study researchers discovered that people who sat for eleven hours a day or more were 40% more likely to die at any given time – of any cause – than those who exercise regularly. Prolonged sitting has also been implicated in colon and breast cancer, and people who sit for most of their day are 54% more likely to die of a heart attack than those who are active, according to another recent study.

Even though writing on the computer is something I do almost every day, if I sit for more than an hour, my butt hurts. That thought reminds me of one of my favorite cartoons: There are two chocolate bunnies, one with a big bite taken out of his butt and the other with one ear chewed off. The first one says, “My butt hurts.” The other says, “What?”

I feel like that first bunny if I don’t get up and move around every half hour or so. In fact, I’ve devised several ways to make sure I get moving. Practicing the Tibetan Rites of Rejuvenation every morning will not make up for sitting all day.

One way I get myself moving is by using the upstairs bathroom instead of the one near my office. Trust me, with the 50 to 60 ounces of water I drink every day, I take quite a few swift trips up and down those stairs. Aim to drink half your body weight in ounces of pure water every day and take a walk to the farthest faucet in your home or place of business to refill your water bottle.

Another way I get moving is to get up from my chair about every half hour and touch my toes or do some other stretching. Sometimes I take two of my small weights (5 lbs. each), lie on my back on my exercise ball and extend my arms straight up, then slowly lower them and repeat this several times. I also do some modified push-ups during a butt break.

What do I sit on at my desk? I kneel on an ergonomic chair most of the time. Other times I sit on my exercise ball. Try them and see if one or the other works for you – both are much better than a regular desk chair, if that’s where you’re sitting all day.

Breathing can be a problem when you sit hunched over a desk for a prolonged period. That posture can restrict the flow of oxygen to your lungs and cause you to breathe less deeply. How does shallow breathing affect you? Perhaps most significantly, when the flow of oxygen to your organs is restricted, your brain can’t function properly. This is dangerous because the brain controls the performance of the rest of your bodily functions. Also, when your brain doesn’t get enough oxygen, there goes your memory, concentration and ability to think straight! So get off your butt and stand up for some deep breathing.

Live longer and grow younger by taking some butt breaks. You’ll be doing your brain a big favor too.

Bye Bye, Sweetie!

“Sugar and spice and everything nice.” When we were children some of us took to heart that rhyme about what little girls are made of and we gobbled candy and other sweet things. Not so that we’d become sweeter – it just tasted darn good! It certainly sounds better than “Slugs and snails and puppy dogs’ tails” – what little boys are made of.  It turns out sugar is not nice – to little girls or big girls orbig or little boys, and many of us have suffered the effects of too much sugar. Now it’s time to leave childhood rhymes behind and remedy that sweet tooth we’ve had since we were kids.

Good nourishment is not only what we put into our body – it also includes what we don’t put into our body. In my opinion – and a number of doctors agree with me – the most damaging thing you can eat is sugar. Inflammation is a major factor in aging and has been linked to heart disease and obesity, arthritis, gastritis, colitis, dermatitis, and other chronic conditions, and sugar is a major cause of inflammation.

How many grams of sugar are you eating a day?Numbers can be very important, but few are more important to your health than the number of grams of sugar you’re consuming each day. I say ‘grams’ rather than ‘teaspoons’ because you’re probably aware of how many teaspoons of sugar you put into your coffee or oatmeal, but you may not be mindful of the sugar you consume in bottled drinks and packaged food – and those show the amount of sugar in grams.

To convert the grams into teaspoons, divide the number of grams by 4. For a drink that contains 32 grams of sugar, the equivalent is 8 teaspoons!

Here is a very important habit for you to undertake: every time you go to the grocery store, put “look at sugar” on your list. Then when you’re shopping, check to see how much sugar is in the bottled drinks, cereal, canned goods, packaged food, kefir, nut milks and so on. You’ll be amazed.

My anti-aging doctor gave me a goal of no more than 15 grams of sugar a day; preferably 5 grams at the end of each meal, rather than all 15 grams at one time, to avoid rapid glucose fluctuations in my bloodstream. I decided to aim for that six days a week.

Sometimes I go slightly over 15 grams; once in awhile I go under. On the 7th day, I go ahead and splurge and allow myself a break. I normally don’t even take that break but it’s good for the soul to know that I have that freedom.

Ask your healthcare practitioner what your daily limit of sugar should be, and if you should count fresh fruit or not. I don’t because fruits are full of nutrients, fiber, vitamins and minerals. However, I believe even fruits should be limited since they can spike your blood sugar.

What’s sweet and does not spike your blood sugar? Stevia is my favorite – it’s plant-based, has a zero glycemic index and is 200 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. And although experts disagree, some prefer agave as a natural sweetener for its low glycemic index and you need less of it than sugar since it’s one and a half times sweeter.

So say, “Bye bye, Sugar!” and get on the road to healthier sweeteners. You’ll live longer and feel better.

Here we are, midway through January and if you are like most people your resolutions for 2013 are a distant memory. Or perhaps you are one of the “good” ones who, even though the excitement and newness of setting the goal has faded, you are staying the course but it’s become really hard and sheer will is keeping you going.  You are wondering how you are going to sustain it and now question whether the goal is even worth it.

By now you are berating yourself for failing, being weak willed or worse.  I’d like you to consider it is not your fault.  I am not absolving you of your personal responsibility for your success, however I assert you have had your attention on the wrong thing and THAT is not your fault.

We have all been led to believe that the source of change is simply taking new actions.  A common example is the goal of losing weight.  Everyone knows if you want to lose weight all you need to do is eat less and exercise more. While this is accurate it does not take into account the complexity of the issue. How do I know?  Ninety-five percent of people who use this strategy fail.

What you weigh is the result (or outcome) of the design of your life. The simple “eat less, exercise more” solution is like putting a Band-Aid on a wound that requires intricate surgery.

Every result you have in your life, the ones you like and the ones you don’t, are an outcome of past thinking and past actions.  So in the losing weight example, your current weight, body fat, muscle mass, overall health, etc., is the outcome of thousands of choices, decisions, beliefs and actions – most of which have been unconscious. These choices, beliefs, actions (and even lack of action) have become a system of thinking, a complex web of thought or mental model which leads to your actions in the present.

Your mental model runs you and for the most part, you have no idea what it is! You have unwritten rules, disguised as “shoulds,” about absolutely everything. These are the “of courses” to you, the common sense things you think everyone should live by.  Things like:

  • “I should weigh less”
  • “My husband should appreciate me, say I love you, know what I need, etc., more often.”
  • “If he/she loved me he would… (Fill in the blank)”
  • “I should be better organized, focused, intentional, disciplined, etc.”
  • “I should exercise more, eat healthier, spend more time with the kids, spouse, parents.”
  • “I shouldn’t care what others think or let fear stop me.”
  • “I should speak up more, delegate more, etc.”
  • “Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah…”

You get the picture. I am not passing judgment on rules or shoulds; they are neither good nor bad, right nor wrong.  The question is, does the thinking “I should ______ ,” produce the result you want? Does knowing what you should do change your behavior over the long-term.

The litany of shoulds you have is the window to your mental model and the access to causing long-lasting real change.  Each of the shoulds in your life represents a rule or belief to be examined with love and curiosity.  Please be clear this is NOT about positive thinking. That’s like putting frosting on dog food. It may look good but it’s still dog food underneath.

Instead, objectively inquire into the rule with the intention of discovering something new.  Ask questions like:

  • Does this “rule” or belief work for me (produce the result I desire)?
  • Am I actually taking action consistent with the belief?
  • When did I learn this rule/belief?

Did you see the February issue of Life Extension Magazine?

The cover article was about a stem cell technology that Life Extension has been supporting… to the tune of $2 million so far! The company has raised more funding as well.

The ultimate goal is to develop a progenitor cell treatment that will rejuvenate every tissue in your body. That’s right. The implications are… turning the aged into biologically younger versions of their former selves. Individual diseased or aged organs can be targeted as well.

Pie in the sky? Maybe, if they were the only one working on this approach. But others are pursuing it too, including one company I’ll tell you about in a moment which may get there first.

The company that Life Extension has been supporting is BioTime, Inc, headed by Dr. Michael West, one of the most brilliant researchers in the world and one of the most respected stem cell researchers. BioTime is a publicly traded biotechnology company focused on the emerging field of regenerative medicine. Their core technologies center on novel stem cells capable of becoming all of the cell types in the human body.

Mike West has been a champion of extreme life extension for about two decades.

There are other lesser known champions as well. One in particular has a novel and simpler way to do what BioTime is working on. This particular scientist is just as dedicated as Mike. What sets life extension researchers apart from researchers working on other diseases is… they are afflicted by the condition they are determined to cure.

It’s not that researchers working on individual diseases aren’t dedicated. Most are. It’s just that most cancer and heart disease researchers aren’t afflicted by cancer and heart disease. Self-preservation may be the strongest motivator of all. We see it throughout the animal kingdom. So the bottom line is, when scientists’ lives are on the line, they tend to work more evenings and weekends. They seem to be more innovative. And they tend to be more focused.

That’s one reason I like Mike West. And it’s the same reason I like scientist #2. He is preparing his business plan now and may be able to accomplish on a shoestring budget and in record time what no one before him has done. None but a few of us are even aware of what he has planned and what he has designed.

Hopefully, there are others silently developing world-changing concepts such as this. Meanwhile, I’m pulling for #2 to find one or more investors before too many more of us die prematurely.
